Album Review : Telekinesis - Telekinesis!

  • Written by  Rob Barker

It’s typical, a band writes an album perfect for sunny days, and here I am, stuck in the UK where you’re lucky if it’s not raining, even in August.

As you might have guessed, this means the self titled album by Telekinesis is actually quite good. For the most part the album is filled with cheery pop songs, occasionally venturing into rock territory, essentially sounding like members of Ash and Weezer playing together in a free love colony in the 1960s. The songs that Telekinesis have put together on this album are so joyful and melodic they could melt the heart of even the most joyless puppy kicking old man in the world, a bold claim maybe, but it’s true.

Album opener 'Rust' has an almost Oasis-like quality, but has a more simple feel, thanks in part to the album’s lo-fi production. It’s not all acoustic strum-alongs though, 'Awkward Kisser' mixes piano and drum rhythms that wouldn’t be out of place on The Little Shop of Horrors soundtrack, although it is lacking in the backing singers going “doo-wop” department.

There are, however, some problem with this record, firstly, the amount of happiness on the record does grate after a while, although this is broken up by more downbeat tracks, like 'Plankton'. The other problem is that at times the album is too simple, with the introduction of more complex sounds allowing for multiple listens, something that this album doesn’t really account for.

Despite these faults, Telekinesis are definitely worth keeping an eye on, and seem like a great band to catch live, thanks to their sing along jaunty pop songs and danceable beats.
