Weekly Column - The Froth!
- Written by Stef Siepel
The Weekly Froth! A weekly take on six tracks, most of which have recently popped up somewhere in the blogosphere. Bit of a mixed bag with a slight leaning towards house, disco, and remixes, but generally just anything that for some reason tickled the writer’s fancy.
Track of the week: ‘I Didn’t Believe’ by Flight Facilities feat. Elizabeth Rose
I love Flight Facilities. Their tracks are always such a smooth ride and incredibly catchy to boot, and they always manage to find the right singers to fit their sound. No different this time, with another magnificently flowing track with Elizabeth Rose on vocal duties. Starts with the beat and some handclaps, at which point you might still expect some generic club tune. But soon that little guitar plucking comes in, at thirty seconds you get a nice deep sound, and after 45 seconds that is juxtaposed by some new, lighter elements. After a minute there is Elizabeth with a lovely voice, that is slightly deeper in the verses than in the chorus, with the verses having my preference. They always manage to get in a few extra things, like the percussion around the 3 minute mark and the strings just after that. That’s really nice that is.Flight Facilities also have this kind of poppy vibe to their songs, really accessible sounding, though with this slice of disco thrown in there like a lime in a cocktail drink. Rose is singing “I didn’t believe that something could really happen between us”, and no track better to get something started than on this sweet and smooth tune I reckon.
‘Misterio’ by Munk (Radio Edit)
I already really like the start, with the female vocals laying down the pa-pa-pa-pa-pam. Apparently the first release from Munk in two years this is, and one that has gotten a remix by the ever fun Horse Meat Disco crew. This is the radio edit, so the version you’re going to hear in clubs is going to be a bit longer Thankfully, probably. Lovely catchy and cheeky sound this has, though I can’t quite say the same thing for the lyrics as I don’t understand them (language issues, you know, though like half of it is in English). The vibe is really sexy, something people could definitely get down to I think. It’s also very catchy, there is enough variety thrown in there, sometimes going for the beat, at other times it are the keys who get the upper hand. An example of such a change-up is around 2:30, which makes it all sound a little bit different whilst always keeping that same cheeky feel. The vocals are apparently by Brazilian punk singer Gab Cervallos, and they give that slightly raw edge to this catchy club tune.
'Reverse Skydiving’ by Hot Natured (Benoit & Sergio Remix)
Lovely light sounding start this. Some percussion in the background to keep this one going forward, and the keys lay down the atmosphere of this tune. Around the 45 second mark you get some fragmented female vocals, not diva, more punk-ey I guess. Around 1:15 a deeper synth sound comes in, but we’re still very much in the build-up phase, waiting for the darn thing to explode. Benoit & Sergio first bring in some different sounding female vocals, which are really alluring and seducing. After that we get it going with the beat, at which point we’re about 2:20 into the song. Party mode from then on, with both the beat and the female vocals, which are now actually in full singing mode (though they do bring back those starting vocals on occassion). I just love that vocal delivery in the “you don’t have to jump...” line, so seductive and sexy that. When she makes some of these words longer, that’s lovely. In the mean time the beat is still going, occassionally getting some help from keys and what kind of sounds like a bass sound. Really easy to dance to this, and the vocal delivery puts this one over the hump.
‘Surging Memories’ by Du Tonc
Starts with this kind of melancholic vibe both thanks to the beat and the voice, but soon the rest of the instrumentals add this more hopeful feel to it. I like the guitar they immediately manage to throw in there, amongst a whole host of instruments. The vocals, meanwhile, have gone from slightly melancholic to more dreamy. At 1:20 you can really see the change of feel when that beat now is not alone anymore, but is accompanied by a way more happy-go-lucky instrument. As if this guy was beaten down a bit and then starts walking with his head in the clouds thinking of better moments and days (an interpretation based solely on the feel of the sounds and the title, I might add). If that head-in-the-clouds vibe wasn’t present enough, those synth sounds near the end really take that to another level. Nice track to have on your headset whilst walking along the waterfront and you want to give yourself something to smile about.
‘Never Enough’ by Boris Dlugosch feat. Roisin Murphy (Mousse T & Boris Dlugosch Odd Couple Mix)
I definitely would make a track if I could do it with Roisin Murphy, and I would definitely remix that same track if I could do that with Mousse T. Guess it is always about the ladies by your side or something. So this is a rework by Boris Dlugosch of a track of his own that he did with the always impeccable Roisin Murphy. Lovely nice sounds to start it off with, nice dull beat and bass sounds. The synths just after the minute mark indicate the change-up that is coming, and they basically introduce the singer du jour, Murphy. I just love that voice, and I know I’m defintiely not the only one. Not only does she have a nice voice, but she also manages to put it on the rhythm as well, adding another function to her layer of work. In the mean time the instrumentals totally mesh with her voice, and it keeps the song going forward with those earlier mentioned sounds who are not at all jealous that they’ve been put a bit more in the backgroud by the grand dame. For a moment these rhythm instruments are even ousted altogether in favor of Murphy’s voice, though naturally the beat soon returns in the only tedious moment of the song where its ony the beat and a shitload of echo. Other than that, worth the listen because of those rhythm sounds and that voice.
‘Please Don’t Dance’ by Waze & Odyssey
I guess it’s kind of an ironic statement, the title, isn’t it? Because if you immediately lay down that club beat there, you’re inviting people to do it, surely. That beat along with that second sound really gives it that old school house vibe. Definitely one for in the clubs. At 1:20 you get this nice light synth sound that’s way fun and takes it a bit out of that seedy gay club realm where the shirts go off (which kind of was the vibe it was giving off before and which still might be the best place to play it to be honest). Certainly a sound people can start jackin’ to). About halfway the song is almost stripped down completely, to the point it is barely audible. It doesn’t immediately go into dancing mode after, bringing back a few sounds but not the beat or other rhythm instruments. That beat does return though, over which we hear a chorus of “please” pleads. Nice song to have in ones dance repertoire.
