Cold War Kids – Hold My Home

  • Written by  Emma Lawrence

Dear Cold War Kids, thank you for releasing a new album, because, it’s quite honestly the best thing I’ve heard in years.

Hold My Home is the quinet’s strongest effort since their debut Robbers & Cowards and it certainly doesn’t disappoint. I struggled to find anything wrong with this record, which is hard when you are a music reviewer. It’s most definitely been worth every minute of the wait.

Lead single ‘All This Could Be Yours’ sees the group back on top form, it has a pounding piano and the stellar sing-along refrain the band have become so famous for.

All of the songs would be more than welcome on the lads’ debut effort, but this the fifth studio album from the Long Beach five piece, and they are proving they can stand the test of time.

‘First’ is an epic, almost stadium rock like effort. Proving that the group can still hold their own, and that they know their sound very well. ‘Hot Coals’ sounds like something Arcade Fire would put out, it is simply fantastic and a stand-out track.

‘Hear My Baby Call’ is almost identical to the group’s single ‘We Used To Vacation’, but that is most certainly not a bad thing. The track is familiar, so you feel like you already know it, these guys know how to get a tune stuck in your head.

Title track, ‘Hold My Home’ is something a little bit different: it has a nice electro feel to it, then bursts into melodic guitars and drums. Another stand-out track, and it certainly is a toe-tapper, one you’ll hear down your local indie disco of a Saturday night. ‘Nights & Weekends’ is a slow burner, and is a social commentary. Something which Cold War Kids are again perfect at doing.

So thank you Cold War Kids, for releasing this amazing fifth album. In my humble 25-year-old's opinion, there is not a bad track on this record. Thanks for making us wait so long for it as well. This album is nothing but pure perfection to me, and I can’t wait to listen to it all day, every day for the foreseeable future!

Hold My Home is available from amazon and iTunes.
