Gum Takes Tooth New Single
- Written by Marky Edison
Gum Takes Tooth, the London duo of Jussi Brightmore and drummer Tom Fug, are a unique unclassifiable fury that flirts with both speaker-ripping psych-rock pyrotechnics and synapse-shredding acid house. New single, ‘Fights Physiology (Radio Edit)’, reveals the latter. It is taken from their debut release for Rocket Recordings, which is out on January 25.
While this track is the first all-electronic Gum Takes Tooth recording to be released (featuring only electronic drums rather than acoustic kit), it retains the live ethic that the band have championed since their inception. Analogous to a band performance using traditional instrumentation, the drums and synths have been programmed and tweaked on the fly in real-time to exhilarating effect at counterpoint to cold and scathing vocal delivery. The track forms a springboard of electronic workouts of accelerating velocity that have comprised significant portions of the band’s live sets in recent times.
The stunning b-side is a remix from Beste Aydin, AKA Nene H – one of techno’s most exciting breakout acts. Based in Berlin, she’s hailed as part of a new generation that is pushing the genre forward, the perfect accompanying pairing to pulsate those late night rushes.
Gum Takes Tooth are mavericks to the last, perpetual square-pegs and a band intent on forging onward to break all or any paradigms before them, creating a collection of kinetic anthems to battle everyday oppression - a work of machine-driven mania with its very human heart on its sleeve.
